MBI y el International Code Council colaboran en la publicación de una guía para el uso seguro de contenedores de transporte intermodal ISO reutilizados como edificios y componentes de edificios.

En la actualidad se utilizan en todo el mundo más de 30 millones de contenedores de transporte intermodal ISO. Estos contenedores se construyeron según las normas ISO y se mantienen según las normas definidas por el "Convenio sobre la seguridad de los contenedores" de la Organización Marítima Internacional (OMI).

Nuevos o usados, los contenedores se reutilizan a un ritmo que hace de su reutilización una industria mundial multimillonaria. Los contenedores se reutilizan con regularidad y se adaptan a los usos previstos por el Código Residencial Internacional y el Código Internacional de la Edificación. Como material de construcción, las aplicaciones son muy diversas, al igual que el grado en que el contenedor se utiliza como elemento estructural de construcción.

Las jurisdicciones locales y los programas administrativos estatales están reaccionando ante la creciente tendencia de reutilización de contenedores marítimos, pero pueden estar atrasados en cuanto a normativa y cumplimiento. Esta Guía ICC pretende ayudar a las jurisdicciones estatales y locales, así como a los propietarios, arquitectos, constructores e ingenieros en su evaluación sobre cómo diseñar, revisar y aprobar los contenedores marítimos como elemento de construcción.
